Adimurai
Why is the Tamil martial art Adimurai unique, and why should we practice it?
Adimurai, also called Nadan Adi, was once trained only by kings, heirs, and royal bodyguards, hence known as the Royal Art.
The Venad Empire of Kaniyakumari (South Travancore) established 108 training schools under 108 chieftains to train warriors. This martial system is what we know today as Adimurai.
Its uniqueness lies in combining:
Physical strengthening,
Mental conditioning,
Reflex training,
Yogic breathing,
Empty-hand techniques,
Armed combat,
Pressure-point (varmam) strikes,
Internal energy practice
Because of this, it enables one to read the enemy’s position and defeat them easily.
Even though the Ruling clans suppressed it after the 1700s by killing many masters, some preserved it in secret. Today, only a few lineages still maintain and teach the full art through gurukulam tradition.
Training occurs in three stages:
1. Open-ground practice,
2. Enclosed/camouflaged training,
3. Night practice under moonlight.
